Arian Galdini bio

Arian Galdini, born in Lushnje, Albania on 11 December 1974, has a degree in Business Management and a Masters in Management and Public Policy. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Government Anthropology.
In 2008 was awarded a Chevening Fellowship, the UK Government's international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders, on Government Relations with NGOs and Civil Society at Glasgow University. Later in 2008 Arian completed an intensive programme for Senior Managers in Government at Kennedy School of Government, at Harvard University.
He is currently President of the Management, Leadership and Governance Academy, Lecturer at Luarasi University, Faculty of Economics and Director of the online newspaper Newsetiks.al.
Arian joined the democratic movement in the country in its early days at a young age. In February 1991, whilst in the capital, Tirana, the monument to the dictator Enver Hoxha was being pulled down, Arian lead a memorable protest of high school students in Vlore city. The high school students boycotted lessons in solidarity with the students of Tirana University that were on a hunger strike calling for a change in the political system. Under Arian's leadership, and with the help of a small group of friends, hundreds of high school students marched on February 20th from Vlore’s main square to the Communist Party Committee headquarters and threw the dictator’s picture into a fire. This led to a police charge at students.
Following these developments Arian joined the founding members of the Democratic Party in Vlore and Tirana and became one of the founders of the Albanian Democratic Party Youth Forum (ADPYF).
In 1991 he established Vlore’s branch of the Youth Forum and was thereafter elected Chairman until 1994. The same year he was elected Board Member of the ADPYF, serving until 1994.
In 1997, which was a very difficult year for Albania, Arian was heavily involved in a much needed national reconciliation process to stop the armed 'civic' rebellion following the financial bubble of pyramid schemes. As Salvation Committees were being set up with a view to expand the violence and organised crime south of the country, Arian initiated a pacification and reconciliation movement. For the first time in Albania, following the significant change of the political system in 1990, a group of students with different political views formed the Students Committee for National Reconciliation.
The Students Committee was strongly supported by the US Government, major European countries and the US Embassy in Tirana.
The mission of the Students Committee was the organization of initiatives, pleas and public meetings to raise awareness among conflicting parties and to set a path towards peace and national reconciliation.
Many schools and universities that were closed due to the extraordinary situation were finally opened thanks to the initiatives and awareness campaign of the Students Committee. The Committee also helped many students that were left isolated in student dorms while surrounding streets were under the control of armed groups.  The students received help and support so they could get home safely. Awareness was raised among residents while the library of the Agricultural University in Kamez, a small town near Tirana, which had been barbarically burnt that year was then rebuilt.
A year later, in 1998, Arian was elected Chairman of the Albanian Student Council. That same year, following the assassination of a key political figure – Azem Hajdari (MP), Arian initiated and lead the Student Movement of December 1998. Under his lead 120 students went on hunger strike in December 1998 repeating to some extent the Student Movement of December 1990. The student movement enabled the first comprehensive reform of the Higher Education System.
The most important result of the movement though was the Great Reconciliation at national level after the conflict in 1997, the assassination of Azem Hajdari and the dramatic events of September 14th 2018. The Movement enabled a meeting between the Prime Minister at the time, Pandeli Majko, and the Leader of the Opposition, Sali Berisha. That meeting resulted in an agreement between the parties for a Great Reconciliation. This was effectively the first bipartisan agreement between major political parties in the country and facilitated a shared position of all political parties on historic developments in Kosove.
From 1997 to 2005 Arian was recognised as one of the key young opposition representatives and civic engagement leaders.
In 2001, Arian founded the Albanian Free Forum (AFF) to keep supporting conciliation initiatives and to promote civic engagement inspired by the principles of western political culture.
In parallel to this Arian founded and lead an informal group known as the Albanian Dream Team (ADT). ADT established close relations with the organizers of the Morning Prayer in U.S.A. Both AFF and ADT brought together people with different political views, including leaders and activists from the Democratic Party, Socialist Party, Socialist Movement for Integration, Republican Party, etc.
AFF and ADT activities aimed at promoting dialogue and collaboration between parties, the exchange of good civic, political and institutional practices and peace and reconciliation as universal principles. They were key enablers for development that guaranteed good public service governance.
Inspired by the success of the Albanian Free Forum and the Albanian Dream Team, Arian kept on working on a series of initiatives of major public value. One of the most significant initiatives was the Leadership Forum. This was set to meet monthly and gathered representatives from a broad spectrum of groups such as MPs, Ministers, General Attorneys, Judges, civic activists, artists, intellectuals, students and clerics.
Arian was one of the coordinators of the Balkan Gathering 1 in 2003 and of the second edition in 2005. These two events were of key significance for the country because they enabled Prime Ministers and Presidents from the Balkan countries and senior representatives of the EU and the US Congress to gather in Albania for the first time.
In 2007, when there was another political impasse in the country and the local elections were being postponed, Arian engaged in a very strong mediation conciliation initiative between the political parties in the country. He promoted on national media the setting up of the ‘Statesmen Club’ which was then used as a facilitating mechanism and a force for positive pressure to get the political parties to open dialogue. On January 17th 2007 in an effort to increase the pressure on the need for political dialogue Arian organized the Peace March, the first in Albanian history, that saw politicians, citizens, intellectuals and young people marching together in Tirana.
In 2008, Arian merged the Albanian Free Forum and ADT by setting up a new organization that would build on the amazing success of the Leadership Forum. It was called the Forum for Democracy and Ethics (FDE). He successfully chaired the FDE from 2008 to 2011. FDE was one of the most active and respected civic organizations in the country.
In his role as Chairman of the FDE Arian organized the first Albanian Morning Prayer meeting in March 2nd 2009. Many senior political and institutional representatives of Albania, Kosove, Macedonia and Montenegro, EU, U.S.A. and the UK attended the event.
Arian played a significant reconciliation role between political parties even during the difficult events of January 21st 2011. He set up a petition that was signed by more than 5000 citizens in just a few days, calling for peace and dialogue between the Governing Party and the Opposition. The petition was strongly supported by the EU representative in Albania, Mr. Lajcak and the US representative, Mr. Countryman.
Over the years, Arian has consistently been one of the most renowned civic activists in the country. He has initiated, organized, coordinated and supported hundreds of pro-peace, pro-life and anti-corruption protests.
Arian has extended his conciliation activities and initiatives to Kosove, Macedonia and Montenegro.
The President of Kosove, Mr. Ibrahim Rugova, awarded Arian with the “Mother Teresa” and the “Skanderbeg” medals in September 1999.
The Prime Minister of Kosove, Mr. Ramush Haradinaj, and the former Leader of the Albanian Democratic Party in Macedonia, Mr. Arbën Xhaferi, have publicly supported Arian and praised the work of the FDE through press releases and articles on the daily press.
Mr. Alistair Burt, UK Member of Parliament, the former Congressman and US Ambassador to the UN and FAO, Mr. Tony P. Hall and other British and US politicians and High Court judges have published articles and sent letters of support and esteem to Arian and the FDE.
In 2015, he became one the main protagonists of a major civic battle against the cruelty of the national health system and the pharmaceutical mafia.
Arian is currently the leader of the Freedom, Democracy and Ethics Party. It is a new party in opposition to the governing party and an ally to the Albanian Democratic Party.
Arian is a well-known public figure thanks to his consistent presence on the media. Arian has published hundreds of articles in national and local newspapers and is frequently invited on relevant TV shows.
